My name is Irawandhani Kamarga, you can call me Wanda. I am a mom of a human daughter and four shih tzu dogs. In my youth, I imagined that it would be cool if I get to do the things that I personally like, for work. Never have I imagined that it really would come true.
I have lived in Indonesia all my life. I was born in Bandung, moved to Jakarta prior to elementary school, and kinda split my life between both cities during my childhood and youth. I grew up amongst adults who are artists and designers. Since I was young, I know very well the difference between the two and I have resolved to become a graphic designer since 2nd grade. I am also into books, music, analogue cameras and traveling. I aspire to run, though I ended up just lightly jogging or walking. I ride my bike though, and I can’t live without pilates.
In 2013, I co-found a creative studio, Jakarta-based 1984 together with my partners Andreas Junus and Johansyah Moechtar. Throughout the years, we did many branding and visual works most notably Joyland, Tanamera and Herbana to name a few.
Two years after its inception, 1984 acquired a Risograph machine and made Binatang Press, a small publisher focusing on visual arts and subcultures in Indonesia. Despite the art book fairs, book launches and exhibitions, we are still struggling with people who often thought of us as a Risograph printer (we are a full-fledged publisher!). In late 2024, our dear friend Felix Dass joined in as a partner too.
We’ve been quite busy at 1984, recently there’s Double Happiness motored by our Senior Project Manager, Ryan Makastuji. We made creative-related events because in Indonesia, we still need to have more discourse about creativity and its industry.
Oh did I mention that Andreas Junus is my partner in business and in life? We met many years ago when we worked at an international ad agency. Yes, that’s what too much working overtime does to you.
Other than 1984, since last year I’ve been involved in YPSI, a new foundation that cares for art books in Indonesia. Our first event, Press Print Party 2024 was all about celebration of everything printed. I also help manage my parents villa in Bogor, Vila Teras Makati.
In this blog, I write about things that are related to all that I do, and maybe some more. Sometimes I’ll write in English, and sometimes in Bahasa Indonesia, depending on my mood.
